Chinawoman
Concert
Chinawoman is a rising star on the global map of the alternative music
scene and the artistic brainchild of singer Michelle Gurevich. Her songs
– which “manoeuvre between grandiose retro motifs and a surprising
sincerity” (music.com.ua, May 2010) – are tragicomic, melody-driven,
sentimental and exist suspended in a shadowy glamour. Chinawoman has
drawn comparisons to Nico, Leonard Cohen and Marc Almond, as well as
Soviet-era singing stars such as Edita Peha and early Alla Pugacheva.
Her voice has been described as having shamanic and Morrisonesque
intonations, a timbre akin to Tanita Tikaram. Amid the wave of Eastern
European-styled artists such as Beirut, Devotchka and Gogol Bordello,
Chinawoman singularly captures the romantic Russian domain of this
resurgence. With the repertoire of her two albums, Chinawoman ‘rules’
audiences in the Eastern Bloc from Berlin to St. Petersburg.
Vocals, guitar, keyboard: Michelle Gurevich; Drums: Robin Thomson; Baritone guitar: Diego Ferri.
