Layers
Maja Bajevic’s work Layers, in its visual analysis and creation of abstraction, both bypasses the tension, strangeness and uniqueness of each image, which she has bought from a photo agency and reworked, as well as creates thereby a space for change. These often disturbing images are layered beneath embroidery of escapism, traditional middle class myth and fairy tale. What is seen is all aspects of the deepest of human experiences, focusing not only on common meaning but also on allowing all those involved – those who embroidered, as well as those in the images and those who view them – to move forward in their own definition of identity. Each image cries out about the magic and darkness, the light and mystery of human existence. One cannot exist without the other. There is no beauty without pain. There is no escapism without involvement. The work has been commissioned for City of Women 2011. (Predrag Pajdic)
