Introduction to City of Women Film Program
City of Women, Film Program Intro:
While this year's film program at City of Women still follows the general outlines, ideas, and proposals contained in the overall concept of the Global South, it does so, yet narrowly, in the amorphousness of various possible ways. Instead of a comprehensive cinematic survey of the idea of the South as defined by the concept, we offer imagery from (and of) the South only as a background, perhaps even as a reason to present certain unique directorial visions that would otherwise remain neglected in the local cultural context surrounding City of Women. The South – a stereotyped periphery transformed into the center – will thus provide a springboard for an unruly, picturesque, pulsating plethora of ideas, thematic preoccupations, and formal approaches that can only leave us guessing to what extent the notion of the South has affected their existence. From old masters still at work (and some at the beginning of their careers) to the youngest voices in the international film community; from established names to recent discoveries; from present to past and back again; from impassioned political cries to more subdued, but nevertheless relevant intimate confessions. All together serving, above all, as an experiment in order to discover a common denominator. Vanja Kaluđjerčić
