Buscandose el Pan

Through the creation of fragile sculptures, the basic material of which is flour, Lesley Yendell plays with the existential meaning of bread - the essential sustenance of life, that which fills one in poverty and often represents salvation from starvation. Borrowing its name from a Spanish phrase which literally translates into ‘searching for bread’, Buscandose el Pan speaks of emigration in search of better possibilities. For two days she patiently, carefully, and silently sifts flour, evoking the idea of cheap labour. Bit by bit, the territory expands, as she stencils more and more objects (forks, spoons, sandals, passports…) and life-size human faces, all of which can be blown away by the slightest slip of the artist’s hand. Finally, at the end of her ritual, she sweeps away the white dust, the collective memory of migrant struggles. Milijana Babić
