»Gender Equality in Culture« Conference on Measures to Abolish the Existing Inequalities
In collaboration with Motovila, the City of Women association held a one-day online conference on 25 September, entitled Gender Equality in Culture. As a guest, the conference hosted Else Christensen-Redzepovic, an expert in the field of international cultural connections and head of the project »Voices of Culture – Structured Dialogue between the European Commission and the Cultural Sector«. In her opening lecture, she pointed out the insufficiency of the existing efforts to promote gender equality. She underlined that “in many areas, inequality has increased”. In Europe, factors such as enlargement and transition of the EU, a decade of recession and austerity, the migration crisis, climate challenges and rise of populist nationalist movements in parts of Europe, have distracted political efforts away from promoting core European values such as equality of women and men, human rights and social justice. Inequality, both within and across countries has increased in the past 15 years and in some countries women’s rights are even diminishing.A video recording of her lecture is available here.
In view of these facts, the second part of the conference was held in the form of an online workshop on the most pressing inequalities in culture and the measures that would ensure equal opportunities for female workers in these fields. Among the workshop participants were twenty-two delegates from non-governmental organisations and public institutes from Slovenia and abroad, as well as representatives of Slovenian municipal and state authorities. The Association for Promotion of Women in Culture – City of Women will present the proposed measures to abolish the existing inequalities to the public in December 2020.
